I did a quick search here but found nothing on this topic. Does anyone here have experience with putting an electric power steering pump on a CJ? I've got a power Saginaw box but haven't been running a pump. I found where some hot rodders use them and even one used on an XJ (?) electric motor conversion. I've read that they can work without a computer to regulate pressure, especially on a low rpm engine. Any downside? I'm thinking it can't be any worse then building a bracket for the F-head and running an extra belt.

(warning no research was done before opening mouth)

How many amps do the draw? Might draw a ton of amps like a taurus electric fan.

I'm sure they draw more than an electric fan. A healthy fan motor should draw 15 amps or so.....

    I can see it now
you're idling along on the Rubicon Trail
and because your alternator doesn't put out many amps at idle, you're power steering fails when your battery goes dead....

I've read the draw is between 60-80 amps and a 100-amp alternator is recommended.

From my current perspective, if it failed, it wouldn't be much worse than man-handling my ride now without any pump. :)

I would just build the pump bracket for the motor and forget it. The power used to run the alternator will be about the same as driving the pump with the engine.
No sense in trying to reinvent the wheel. YMMV

I HATE common sense. Absolutely hate it! R) However, I was looking at it again this afternoon and the pile of old brackets I have. Hummmm... We'll see how the weekend plays out. We're not going anywhere anyway.
