I am in the process of a 11" brake swap. With the rear of my 1959 CJ5 torn down I dicided to change the leaking pinion seal. Removed the pinion nut and washer from the shaft, used a puller to remove the yoke, removed seal cleaned surface , installed new seal. installed yoke, installed new pinion nut and washer, Torgued nut to spec.
Now my pinion shaft is loose. It wobbles up and down. Has a good 3/16 play in and out.
What did i do wrong???? :?:?
I need help on this one.

Just a though but did you count how many threads were showing and put it back to this way? I have always done this and it seams to work. Could be wrong though. As for the 3/16" of play I can't really help with....sorry.

What did you torque it down to? If memory serves, it's like 225 foot pounds. The Dana 44 is a shimmed pinion, and nothing should change just pulling the yoke off and swapping seals and torquing it back down. Make sure your yoke isn't hanging up or you forgot the big washer underneath the pinion nut.

Thanks for the all the good suggestions. I have the nut torqued to 210 ft lbs and the washer is under the pinion nut. I'm wondering if i had a bearing that exploded and when I removed the yoke it fell apart. Anyone ever seen that happen?
Murphys law has taken over my jeep.
    Any other ideas.
    Thanks

I have learned a valuable lesson with this pinion seal.
I borrowed a Snap-on torque wrench from a mechanic friend of mine and rechecked the torque. The torque wrench I was using was at least 100 lbs off. Lesson here is cheap precision tools give you poor precision.
That torque wrench is now stored with the other trash, at the curb in the trash can.
Thanks again for all the advise.
