    Hi,

Someone told me that the correct color for a 1978 CJ5 258 engine is AMC blue. Well, I know this is not correct because my engine is original with most of the paint still on the engine. I had to replace my thermostat housing that is an NOS part but not painted. The color on the engine looks turquoise. I researched a few sites such as AMC paints and read differrent colors for 78-79 Wedgewood blue, 76-78 Captain blue etc... I also read that Pontaic blue was used. I am finding it a bit confusing and look for sites with color charts for these colors with no luck.

Anyone out there have color chips with these colors or suggestions?

    Thanks
    Penny

Mmm. Grouperboy's looks right to me. The top picture looks bluer becasue of the lighting or the camera or ... the lower pictures are better. I'd say the block is darker because he hasn't cleaned it like the valve cover. Both shpuld be the same turquoise color.

Yes, the color is not really blue. I attached the photos of my engine. I would like to know what the correct Ditzler paint code is if anyone knows?

    Thanks

This is what I came across. Since my CJ5 is a 1978 that might have been built in late year it most likely has the Pontaic blue which (see list at bottom).

    ENGINE COLOR YEAR PAINT CODES
    196 L Head gray 56-65
    196 OHV (1) lancelot turquoise 64-66
    196 aluminum (1) silver 61-64
    250 (2) gray 56-60
    287 forum blue 63-66
    327 (3) red 64
    327 rampart red 64-66
    199 cape cod blue 64-67
    290 copper 66
    232 rampart red 64-67
    290 gold 67
    343 copper 67
    all caravelle blue 68
    all blue poly (metallic) 69-72
    all AMC engine blue 73-83
    V8s (4) rampart red 71-73
    151 pontiac blue 79-83 [sic] Ditzler(PPG) #15159
    all black 84-up

    NOTES:

Valve covers are Rampart Red for some or all of these engines.
The 250 V-8 is believed to be the same gray as used on the 196 L-head engines
Different sources give different paint codes. Possibly used as dealer service paint of slightly different color
All 1971 California V-8's and AMC engines used in International Harvester vehicles were red in color to distinguish them from other engines on the assembly line as California engines required different emission controls.

Here is a photo of my engine. I would like to match up the thermostat housing to the original color. It is an all original unrestored CJ5 that was just documented as a reference vehicle. The heater hoses were the only incorrect addition to the CJ which was jsut replaced with black hoses.

Pontiac Blue only applies to the 151 cid inline 4-cylinder as I read this.

I think you want AMC engine blue, said to apply from '73-83. AMC is wrong for '73 Jeep I'm sure, because my factory-new '73 (in '73) was blue poly. From the year ranges and displacements, this list covers AMC engines, not AMC/Jeep. I could point out the discrepancies if you like.

I suggest you sample "Seymour paints en-66" for color match.
