    because the coming soon V8 exhaust and clutch linkage wasn't going to work..

    Hmm, there are '71 Commandos out there that have Saginaw. Maybe I should've used that argument? R)

    That reminds me of a sampling of what I was told re: having a D18 rebuilt in my area: The mosy interesting response was from a very well known and capable shop ... $950 to rebuild, if no gears/hard parts were needed ... I'm still laughing :p

    So, I'm still wondering what the Saggy discussions have to do with what the OP asked about his Ross box. Honestly, I could care less about anyone's opinion about how inferior the Ross is to anything else. I subscribed to the thread to learn more about a true early jeep's Ross steering box. Thanks to BrianP, I know a bit more. :beer:

    I think you had your answer in the post you quoted.

    That pretty much sums it up right there to me. It's not worth the effort to rebuild it, put Saginaw in. That's what it has to do with the original question.

    I'm not looking to have any kind of super-duper trail rig or speed demon. It is only going to be used on weekends to go surf-fishing. I would like to keep it as stock and original as possible so unless you guys tell me that the Ross box is going to explode after about 10,000 miles I'm gonna stick with the stock setup. I will give Northstar Willys a call to see if they have rebuilt V6 boxes.

    I had my answer long before this thread.

    I'll continue to wait patiently for substantive answers to posts regarding those things deemed "not worth rebuilding" such as the Ross box. Based on a lifetime of experience, I'm expecting many such components, and their rebuilding, to outlast yours and my lifetimes, when given modest attention, skill, and maintenance.

    :shrug: I believe if you read my original post I stated that a Ross box was adequate for a stock Jeep driven occasionally.

    If that's not substantiative enough an answer, them I'm sorry that I poked my nose into this thread since I don't have enough experience to give an answer here apparently. I'll try to find something that I might know about next time.

    I am by no means a fan of the Ross box. I think they do wear out too fast, and the extra draglinks, etc. lead to too much slop. However, I fully understand the desire to keep it mostly stock. Like I said above, it's fine for the occasional drive.

    Have fun with it. Enjoy it. That's what's important.
