My CJ stalled twice last night when I was wheeling. The first time I was in a mud hole so deep with only the right tires that water was just starting to come in on my passengers feet:), left tires were on level ground. and it died. The second time I was climbing a wall of dirt that just cleared the front shackles, as soon as I got all four tires on the wall it died. Both angles were very steep, one side to side the other front to back. It died when I needed it most. Carburated engine to blame?

Not necessarily. Lots of things could contribute: how fast the engine was running, how hard the stop was, how much you were bouncing before the engine died, whether or not you got the clutch in quick enough, and so on. Part of becoming a good offroad driver is knowing what will kill the engine and knowing how to prevent that situation from happening.

With low fuel level you could have uncovered the pickup when you were leaning. Thereby starving the engine of fuel.

But the engine can run for 20-40 seconds with just the fuel in the carb bowl. If you suck a little air here and there its not going to stall you out.

along with the low fuel tank idea... when is the last time you checked your fuel filter, less fuel will be noticeable and stallworthy when at angles...?

also, if you were bouncing around when it stalled, could be a poor ground on a component (like ignition-happened to me a while ago, had me stumped for a bit-just randomly happened), but if it is starting right back up, that is not likely.

    good luck

jeep designed their carbs to flood and stall in those situations so you appreciate the brakes and a good tow strap. :D

could be the ignition, especially if you have the '75's "BID" distributor. before replacing with an HEI unit, that thing drove me nuts. random stalls. sometimes go for weeks without problems, other times couldn't drive 100' without problems. that system is completely unreliable, especially with old wiring.

it could be a part of the stalling issue.

It was not bouncing at all, just crawling through a muddy mess.... Low Fuel is a posibility/ my gas tank has a hole in it at 1/4 full. any more than a quarter tank and I engage a no smoking rule in the garage. the tank was almost empty that night
