Replaced the ignition with the PERTRONIX kit which made a huge difference! Now I have an easy starting engine that runs much smoother. The problem is that I have to have a little choke applied to get the jeep to run right (smooth idle). The amount of choke used is very slight (10%) to get the jeep to run well.

The jeep has a new SOLEX Carb.

Sounds like you have a vacuum leak somewhere that is leaning out the mixture, or else your idle mixture screw is way off.

To adjust the idle mixture, I would back the mixture screw out 2-3 turns and see if it will idle without the choke. If it will, let it idle while slowly turning the mixture screw back in until it starts to sputter, than back off 1/4 turn. This will get you in the ballpark.

If you cannot get it to idle without the choke, I'd use a can of carb cleaner to spray down the carb mounting base to see if it is leaking vacuum there.

Will silicone work to seal carb and intake gaskets?

NO! Gasoline and Sillycone are not compatible.

Personally, I've never needed to use a sealer on a carb gasket, too much chance of getting something stuck in a tiny passage on the baseplate.

On the F-head four, there shouldn't be an intake manifold, the carb bolts to the top of the head IIRC.
