I recently bought another 74 Jeep CJ5 with an inline 6 in it that I am wanting to do a few modifications on so it can get out of it's own way. The trouble is I don't know which 6 cylinder this is. I looked at the numbers between #2 and #3 spark plugs and found this number 911C05 on the block. The engine was rebuilt just before I got it with only 5000 miles on it, I am not sure if those are factory numbers or if the rebuilder ground off the factory ones and stamped his own, whoever put the numbers on sure didn't get them in a straight line. Looks like they were trying to stamp them on while onboard a vessel in 30 ft. seas!!! The engine has a 1 bbl. carb on it, I am wanting to put a 2 bbl. on along with HEI distributor and mild cam to see if I can get it to stay up with traffic!! Any help id'ing this engine will be appreciated.

Have you checked the Technical Library on this site? It's usually pretty good with that sort of stuff

A glance at the technical library does not reveal this info.

According to my '77 FSM, it's a 2V 258 block, build date Nov. 5, 1976. The first year for the 2V 258 was 1977 AFAIK, so this block would have come from a 1977 model full-size Jeep (ie Wagoneer or J-truck).

Not an issue from my POV - likely the engine has been rebuilt once with a reman motor. All you get when you buy a complete engine or a short block from a rebuilder is a compatible motor, and no guarantee it's the same year/model as your car.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it very much. I had looked in the technical library but as Tim said it doesn't list it and of course my '74 FSM didn't have those numbers. It still has the 1V carb on it, would the adapter and 2v carb give it any more noticeable power? Thought I'd ask before I invested in it.
