Where were the spare tires mounted on '75 CJ5's? I've only seen pics of them with the rear-mounted carrier. Did they also come mounted on the side?

Did they all have a spare?

Yes (another short answer :) ).

Possible you could get a spare delete - Jeep was easy about such stuff. All had the side mounted spare with a tailgate or rear mounted spare with the solid back panel.

As best I can tell, mine on the 75 CJ5 is in its original location

My 75 has holes for the tire mount right on the back of the tub, where TxSwimDad's is shown. I see on 4WDHardware that they have a mount for hte rear in the original location available

The difference is probably if you have a tailgate or not. With the gate, you get the sidemount, or as an option, the body mount rear swing out carrier posted above. IIRC, there were two different authorized mfgrs for the swing out carriers. W/O the gate, you get the stationary rear mount.

    That's my feeble theory...

AFAIK the only "factory authorized" swing-away was the Whitco, pictured above. The Kayline carrier was also very popular, but not "factory authorized." Again, AFAIK the only thing special about the "factory authorized" accessories is that the box had the Jeep logo on it, and that you could order them through the dealer parts network. Some of the "factory authorized" accessories could be ordered from the regular option list (like the Meyer cabs) for delivery on the Jeep, and some not, like the Whitco carrier.

Nice Jeep, farfle! Original wheels seem to be pretty rare on still-in-service CJ's. Does the wheel bolt directly to the body tub or does it have a mount?

I just saw the 4WD Hardware swing-away carrier last night as I was looking through their catalog.

The area where it would have been mounted on the side on mine is long rusted out, if I'm looking in the right spot. I will most likely go with the 4WD swing-out carrier - it does seem that it would have a tendency to get it the way while 4-wheeling if mounted on the side. I'll post a pic of the rear quarter of mine - see if you guys can tell if a spare was ever mounted there. Thanks.

Here is a picture of the passenger-side rear fender, where the spare would have been mounted if it was ever there. It could stand to be cropped in closer - I'll try to do that. Can anybody tell if it was mounted there? Thanks.

Yes, see my post above. You have a tailgate, so the spare was mounted on that corner. No other possibilities. The mushroom-shaped bolt is a bumper for the spare tire. BTW the spare won't fit on the side of the body with the flares on there.

Thank you! I didn't know if the flares were original or not, but now that I know that the spare was there, I guess they're not!

Did the spare tire mount right to the body or did it have a mount?

Thanks Alex. Tim has it well covered here, the only thing I could add is that if I had my druthers, I would have the spare on a swing out mount. I couldn't afford such a device, so I kept the original mount. However, the mount has been reinforced with aluminum on both sides of the body, which you can't see. Still worry about tearing that sucker off, though.

    Looks cool, IMHO, though.

So, all indications lead to my Jeep having had the side-mounted spare, correct?
I will still likely wind up going with the swing-out carrier, but it's nice to know what it came with originally.
Thank you all for your help.
