Need ideas with install of power steering pump on Chevy 283. Am doing Herm's conversion and as you can see from the pictures I lack room for the pump because of the steering box crowding into the area where the pump normally mounts. Am showing 2 pictures, one with the pump just set in to show the lack of room and in the other picture you can see the mounting holes where the bracket would normally mount. Are there other mounting brackets that would work? Maybe move the alternator or p/s pump to the passenger side? Had made a bracket to mount to frame on passenger side but had second thought about not mounting to engine in case of movement. Any ideas or pictures would be great.

Dick, methinks you are going to have to either scour the boneyards for a PS pump bracket for the other side of the engine, fab your own for the same, or go with a traditional Saginaw PS setup. The picture you posted looks really tight!

    Wow that is tight.

    Wasnt Herm's kit ment for a v6.?

You can just fab your own,
not sure if I have have seen one stock,
    on the wrong side before.

I would start with some pipe to run the bolts through to the block.
Cut those to length for your belt alignment then fab some plate around the pipe to make it sturdy.

IIRC, some late '60s Chevys had the PS on the lower left (facing the vehicle) and the alternator just above it. I'm thinking '66-'67 Chevy IIs, but I could be wrong...

don't know if this helps or not, but it's my setup on a 289 ford. I had to play w/ spacer size to get the belt lined up, but it works/fits great.

Has anyone here done Herm's power steering set up? I currently have my pump located in front of the grill and was wondering if it's worth the time and effort to move into the engine compartment?

Zup, you might do a search as we've covered this pretty extensively. I'm thinking you mean the steering gear box is in front of the grill? The pump is driven by the crank pulley via a belt so needs to be mounted to the engine.....

If it's been converted to Saginaw steering already on the front frame rail and it works ok, why re-invent the wheel? That's the style most people convert to. It's been done for literally decades and works fine if done correctly. Herm's is an interesting idea but as you can see there are certain disadvantages. Herm has that set up in his Jeep with a Chev V-8 but his motor and trans were moved towards the passenger side...... Nickmil
