Need help with Correct Paint color for a 1956 CJ5 motor ?

I am restoring a 1956 CJ5 that is virtually rust free and in very good condition

I am planing on going back with the original Comet Blue color of paint.
Anyone have a good source for classic paints such as the Comet Blue

Also anyone know the correct color of paint for the motor and stuff like the oil filter canister. The engine looks like it was part black and the lower part of the block was painted orange.

I have seen the canister orange and black dont know which is correct.

 

To get the paint color correctly go to a good paint shop and have them custom mix it. Most older shops will have books going back that far. Also, there is a link to paint samples on the CJ3B page:

You can always take a color to them and say "match it" if their books don't go back that far.

I agree on the engine. All I have seen indicates black...my oil canister was orange originally.

 

My F-head appears to have been painted black from the factory.

 

I had same question. Mine appears to be orange as well but compared to filter it looks red.

Any ideas?

 

hmm.. i've got a solid orange f-head and a solid black f-head sitting in my barn--both of which i was told had original paint on them...

 

I read something somewhere about three different engine colors, depending on the compression of the motor. I think one color was yellow, for high altitude I believe, can't remember the other color (blue?), and then black. Can't remember where I read it either, seems I have CRS disease.

 

I think it's pretty generally accepted that the drivetrains were all black from the factory...with the exceptions Ron noted. There was a blue and yellow (one was for high altitude, one was a low compression export I think). The oil canister should be orange, with Fram decals on it. I'm doing a stock resto on my '55, and I know black is correct but...it's also really boring and hard to tell where a leak is coming from. I'm really tempted to shoot mine with a coat of red to give it some color. I have an F-head (1956 dated) that I'm going to put in it that was painted red when it was rebuilt, and I really like the color. I have a feeling it's going to be red .

 

Someone here, I think it was Howard, painted his engine a light gray inside a white engine compartment, and I thought it looked really good in his photos. I believe he had problems with it flaking and staining though, and I think he changed it during the rebuild, didn't he?
