    Hi,
Finally getting into this conversion after gathering parts for a year. Anyway, several questions:

    1) I have it down to the bare steering knuckle which is still mounted on axle housing. What goes back on next the backing plate or the spindle? then what? ( It was spindle then backing plate when I took it off)??

2)The article mentions adding 140 lube after assembled. There is no seal that I can see around the axle shaft inside the tube. Wont the differential lube flow back and forth between the diff. and the knuckle?? Is it still necessary to add more 140 fluid??( Spicer ujoints)

More questions to come Im sure.

    Thanks,
    Josh

    Spindle first then caliper bracket.
The axle seal is inside the housing right behind the carrier bearings in the differential.
Make sure the knuckle is topped up to the bottom of the fill plug.

When mounting the backing plate the conversion article mentions putting in 1/4 inch longer bolts. Why? The original bolts seem to go in fine. If I put in longer bolts, wont they stick out the backside and run the risk of hitting the moving parts inside like the ujoint??

The reason is the caliper bracket is thicker than the drum brake backing plate. If you re-use the original length bolts the bolts won't thread into the knuckle all the way and you may pull out the threads of the knuckle which is a common problem anyway. You may want to consider the knuckle stud conversion for strength.... Nickmil

Thanks nickmil youve been a big help.
I think ill go with the new bolts. If the old bolts didnt tear out in 40 years I dont think they will now. I dont do much serious off road mostly road and a little mud, lots of snow. I cold see them tearing out if I had huge tires or get the thing airborn but it will be good. Ill let u know if I run into any thing else. Oh, what is 140 wt oil?, I have 85-90 on th shelf, seems like that is what ran out of there.

You might try "Knuckle Pudding" which is a combination of grease and gear oil. 140W oil can be hard to find. Try a search under knuckle pudding. There's a ratio of how much of each to mix but I can't remember off the top of my head what it is.....Getting old and tired I guess.

the last ratio i found was 90 wt and grease in about a 1:1 ratio. i actually add a little more grease and stirred until smooth. mmmmmmmm... looks good and smells like a jeep!

I found 85w-140 oil at autozone. I used that. I got one side of the disc conv done. seems to be OK. I had to buy a 5/8 fine thread "jam" nut and large washer to make the brake hose tight where it goes through the bracket on the frame. My next step is to pull the single MC and put in the dual MC and some new brake lines. This could be tough. I have an automatic trans conversion and I am afraid the bellhouse area may stick out too far where the MC bolts. It is just the very corner of the flange so I may have to cut it off. Another part that worries me is that where the single MC mounts, there is a bracket welded "boxing" in the frame. It sticks out toward the middle of the jeep. I might have to cut this out or do all of them have this??
