This data plate came on my 58 CJ 5, is it stock or was it added on later?

Hard to tell from a photo. If original, it looks like it had been removed and re-attached with phillips screws/bolts. Probably when that pretty metallic blue paint was applied. My jeep is newer, my plate is on the firewall, but it is riveted, as I suspect yours was from the factory. Others with more detailed knowledge will chime in....

By "stock" you mean factory equipment for civilian Jeeps? It's an ID plate for a vehicle meant for government service, so vehicles sold to the public would not have it. Note "Supply Arm or Service Maintaining Vehicle". I'd expect these were applied at the factory to meet the specs of a government contract.

By stock I do mean factory equipped. There is also an ID plate on the firewall with the same serial number. It also is attached with Phillips head screws. I put the blue paint on but the Phillips head screws were on there before I repainted.

Tim can you give me any more information on what is meant by “Supply Arm or Service Maintaining Vehicle”
    Thanks for the information.

I have the same type of plate on my dash. Screws are original method of attachment. In my case, my Jeep was delivered to the US Forest Service. Jeeps were also supplied to the military and Border Patrol, there may be other branches as well. Any Early CJ delivered into government service will have that dash plate. There was probably a Warranty decal on the dash as well. I still have mine, but some moron drilled a hole through it sometime in the past. If your dash has been re-painted, it was probably sanded off or painted over. I only know my Jeep was Forest Service because you can still see evidence of the green paint here and there.
