I have to take the lower bumper off to get to the bolts on the shackles out for my lift kit. and while its off I would like to make it more sturdy so I can get a tow from it if needed.

Ok So the PO put a bracket on the frame, and connected it to another bracket and bolted a bumper to it. as you will see he also did some body work. I was going to mount some tow hooks to it but i dont trust it. it moves if you jack it up. and it is not square on the car.
I dont want to spend any $ so creative answer are welcome. please help:?

interesting. I'd tear it all off and start new. I certaintly wouldnt want to pull or be pulled by that thing.

You dont necessarily have to throw it out, its got a good ... on second look, its got a whole lot of wacky going on. I'd start fresh.

I agree, if you want cheap, leave it be until you can afford to do it right. Looking at the downward facing slots holding the lower bumper in place in the last picture, it amazes me it's still under the vehicle.

Well I need recovery points on the back so I have to start from scratch. I called a local metal shop and they want me to bring them some specs. So Monday I will bring my custom bumper design over to them and hope it works. here are pics of the dual bumper removal.

Interesting. How did you remove the bumper without dropping the fuel tank?
I am building a bumper for mine now and am almost finished. My Jeep has no tailgate, so I opted to not use a swing out tire carrier. I built my bumper out of 3/16" X 2" X 4" tube. I used most of the ideas from a bumper build I found from a link on this site, plus info from those here who had bumpers similar to what i had in mind.

Here's s link to one place I got info from. If ya want I can post a few pix up when I get it home next week or so..

Look at some of the first pics. the PO rigged the entire thing up terrible. I removed 4 bolts and it fell off, 2 by hand. the tube one was even easier to take off. I am going to sell it once I get the other bumper done. hopefully I can get the other bumper done next week

Here's a link to another bumper thread... Looks like he re-located the tail lights as well

I would also be cutting off all that sheet metal or fiberglass panel hanging down over the frame. Will make mounting a new bumper much easier.

Erik, look at the A-Z website. His bumper and fabrication parts may give you and your shop some ideas.

Rokmen has some bumper kits you can get ideas from too:

On the rear, your recovery point does not need to be "tow hooks". If you build a good strong bumper, tied securely to the frame, a well mounted 2" receiver can serve as your rear recovery point, Strap can be connected by putting the loop of the strap into the receiver and running the pin through the loop, or using a "shackle bracket and clevis" in the receiver.

Here you can see how I tied a receiver into the 4x4x1/4" square tube that I used as my rear bumper on my old '71:

For recovery I simply put the shackle bracket in to the receiver and pinned it, attached one loop of the strap, and was ready to pull or be pulled.

    HTH!!

EDIT: Here's a pretty good fabricators forum. Scroll back through threads on bumpers for more ideas...
