Okay I need your guys help. I'm going to look at what appears to be a really nice garage kept Renegade for cheap. It is a 79 or 80. Is there anything to look for and what is a good deal? 31,000 original miles.

    31,000 miles?

Depending on condition, I would say $5000-$20,000 (edit:-scratch the 20k- no more than 10k)

    Look for:
    1. Rust- floorboards, frame, windshield, gas tank
    2. Engine- Running? Smoke? If it only has 31,000 miles it prob has been sitting SOMEWHERE for all that time. Most likely will need everything but an engine, transfer case, and both differentials. And you will have to change fluids in all of those to get a true accounting of what you have. Most likely you will have water/mud/goop in the driveline.
    3. Top? Soft, or does it have a hardtop? Up north those guys will pay a lot more for a jeep with a hard top.

I could go on forever, but.....

79 will have a D20 tcase, the 80 will have the better D300... but the 80 will also have a weaker tranny. The 80 might have 5-bolt hubs instead of the stronger 6-bolt. (can't remember if the change was 80 or 81).

    Otherwise the same.
Look for rust-through in the rear of the frame between the rear crossmember and the rear axle, also in the frame about centered under the doors, and fore and aft of each shackle/spring hanger.

    Price?
    The cheaper the better....
    got pics??

    Good luck!

BTW, mine's a '79- go to my photobucket to see what I started with. Err- scroll past all the grouper photos that I have on page one. The other 100 photos on there are of the jeep.

I paid $900, but mine has 180,000 miles, was not running, and had been in Ohio, where the whole tub had rusted out from underneath it and the sheet metal had been (badly) replaced by the PO.

I got lucky and the engine and driveline were ok.

I wasn't so lucky on small parts.

    Alternator
    Battery
    Front Rotors/Pads
    Master Cylinder
    Steel Brake Lines
    Fuel Lines
    Front Bearings (inner-outer)
    Control Arm
    Fuel pump
    Cap/rotor/plugs/wires
    Oil and Filter/fuel filter
    Shocks
One push rod and oil seals for the valve guides
    Ignition solenoid
    shifter boots
Glove box (plastic to replace the rotten cardboard)
Gas Tank/Sender/Fuel Lines for Filler neck and vent
    Various Light Bulbs
    Bikini top
    Paint (I did it myself)
    New Fender Flares

    I still need:
A carb kit (coming from 4wd)
    New seats
    Tires
    Updated wheels
Blower motor (not a necessity with no top though)

    It never ends.....

I have about $2000 in parts, and I did all the work myself.

"Her husband died, yes, the same one with the wine and the boat for sale that I bought earlier,,,,,,,,,,,,anyway, this is her jeep she wants to sell for $2800, which is tax value. I have no need for it, but would make a nice ride for someone. She needs the money and not the jeep. Here are a few pics.

It needs a battery and the tires are OK, but not great. Other than that it looks great and runs good, at least around Edisto. It has been garage kept and the soft-top is in excellent shape. If you are interested stop calling me names and let me know.

It is a 1979 or 1980 model with only 31000 original miles. "

This is from his email he sent out.

Here's where I had a BIG problem....The road salt settled in a area between the gas tank and the rear frame rails- rotted out areas on both sides of the gas tank. I had to scab on L-brackets on both sides, and also buy new rear shackles (add those to my previous list) and weld them to the frame.

Here's what the salt did to the rear bumper and gas tank:

I also had problems under the passenger seat:
