    hello,
i've installed a new solex to my engine.after some usage, tried to inspect the spark plugs and found them black.
buyed one disc type fuel press regulator to lower the fuel pressure to 1+1/2 to 2 psi.
my question is:is there any problem with the mechanical fuel pump and the regulator?i'm thinking to use an electrical fuel pump 4-7 psi with the regulator.
can i connect the electric before the mechanical?my think is to use it on priming after non-use periods to avoid too much cranking, and in case of fault connect it to power, bypass the mechanical and continue.

    Thank you
    George

I use a mechanical pump (replacement w/no glass bowl) and a Solex. Really haven't had any problems other than carb throat icing until warmed up. A block heater cured that on really cold days. I'd think the regulator would be fine with the mechanical pump, after all its job is to regulate;). The Solex does seem to lose its prime after a long period of sitting, but not enough of a bother to me to plumb and wire in another pump. As long as your mechanical pump is in good shape I wouldn't bother. If it's weak, I'd go one way or the other but wouldn't bother with both.

a good mechanical can produce 4+1/2 - 5psi at cranking speed as the miltary manual says.i will check that.
but the solex only needs 1+1/2 to 2 psi

i want to wire the electric with a push button.my think is after a long sitting of the jeep to work the pump before starting.and then start the engine.i will remove the mechanical pump.
will this solve the priming problem with the solex after a long non-usage period?

It seems like that would eliminate the problem of the carb being empty, which definitely happens after a few days of sitting. Personally it hasn't bothered me enough to make me want to use an electric pump though. If you try it let us know the results. :)
