    '75 Cj5...

I did some searching and never found a post that talked about this....

I am thinking about adding a 2.5 inch lift to my CJ. If I put the new springs and shocks on it, What other factors do I have to consider?
    Drivetrain? Steering?

I used to wonder this myself. I finally went ahead and did the 4" lift (springs). And here's why.....

When I was researching about lifts I was told that any lift 2" and under would require "no other mods" whether it be steering or drive train. Don't get me wrong, I know it's still arguable with a 2" lift (some guys saying to still get the dropped pitman arm, double check brake line length, etc), but again, was told it could be done.

I went with my 4" lift since I got a dropped pitman arm with the kit (along with shocks). I was replacing/upgrading my brake lines anyways so I got the stainless steel extra long ones (recommended for the 4" lift). I threw on some 33" tires and all is well!

Just my 2 cents. I am sure the more knowledgeable will throw in their 2 cents as well!

    Good luck with your lift!

    :D

Its the arm that is attached to the bottom of your steering box and connects to your drag link that runs to the passanger side steering arm. You can get ones that locate the drag link end lower down so the angle of the drag link is closer to factory when lifting a vehicle.

With most 2.5" lift kits you won't need anything else. You will be 90% factory ride quality. I think caster shims on the front springs help return the front pinion to the right place and a drop pitman can help if you get steering issues. Most people I have seen don't worry about those. Some kits even come with springs pre assembled with caster shims.

    Two tips
#1 Put the kit on put don't snug it down. Then jump on all four corners real good to flex the springs and shackles. Then tighten it up. Recheck in 200 miles.
#2 Forget unbolting the old ubolts. Cut them off. Saves time and knuckles.

    Other considerations;

    Caster angle
Drive shaft & pinion angle, binding, length (at full droop)
    Brake line length
    Bump stops
Completeness of the kit. Be prepared to replace all of the hardware and all of the bushings. Including U-bolts. The steering geometry will be changed and need to be adjusted accordingly.

There are probably some that I am forgetting... Not all 2.5" springs will will perform the same. Most of those items are easily overcome. I have done three inch kits without a drop pitman arm or brake lines. But also done a 2.5 inch lift that required both. Same for the other items. Many lift kits come with shims or spacers to alleviate some of the issues. I have jeeps both with 2.5" and 4+" lift right now. Both perform and drive very well with that amount of lift.

Looks complete to me. After you install, you will need check the ride and MAY have to add a drop pitman. Also, either replace your shackles with something more HD or at least change the bushing in them. It's a lot of $$ for a kit but its something that completely changes the look and capabilities of your Jeep. Also, if done right with a good kit, maintains a safe and comfortable ride. Good luck!, and post some pics of the process - then wheel it and post some more pics.

right there next to the plow mount. It is what the spring attaches too that allows the spring to flex.

Erik, The skyjacker 2.5" is a good kit... I ran these springs on my old '71, but I ran Rancho 9000 adjustable shocks with it. If you've got the $$$, I recommend going with Rancho 9000s.
BDS is another good 2.5" lift...
    Give this guy a call:
    Bob Supplee

He's a small distributor in Oklahoma with alot of good contacts (stuff is drop shipped) and great prices. Bob is a great guy to talk to... give him a call, tell him what you are looking for, let him give you prices. (his prices usually have shipping included, not an "extra").
I've bought alot from him, as have many other members here.
Give him a call, and let us know what he recommends and how his prices stack up angainst Qtec or 4WDH...

I spoke to Bob about 4 times today. I am ordering a BDS 2.5 kit from him tomorrow morning. He really helped with some things. I am getting off these saggy old springs and going up a little bit. I promise to post plenty of pics if you all promise some guidance and tips!

    That's great Erik!!
Bob Supplee gives good advice and the benefit of his experience when you buy from him... and he saves you money to boot!
The glossy catalog places have alot of cool stuff, but they are short on sound advice, such as what is best for your rig and how you'll use it. And their prices are just too high.

Keep us posted with pics, let us know if you need guidance.
Sounds like you'll be ready for the Tioga run!! :tea:
