I have a 71 CJ 5 with 10" drums in the front. Removed the drums yesterday and noticed no self adjust hardware other than the spreader with star on the bottom. The way I see it the only adjustments on these brakes as is would be made by me which doesn't sound right to me. I am looking for a self adjust kit and can not find any thing for the 71 with 10", can I use a later year 10" self adjust kit. I assume all drum brakes utilize a self adust of some type? Guess it was no wonder I had no brakes, other than the front passenger side.

On the 10" '71 brakes you should have a pivot pin on the secondary shoe with two rods attached to it. One of the rods attaches to a spring type mechanism that attaches to the star adjuster. From '72 on I beleive its one cable instead of the two rods and a different type of mechanism that attaches to the star adjuster. Sorry I have no pictures. Maybe someone else has some.

Thanks scarecrow that's what I figured. I have/had the two springs at the top, and one spring riding across the top of the star adjuster. I was able to find a photo of the correct set up, but so far unable to find the spring type mech & rod. Anyone know if a later model self adjuster would work? Are all 10" jeep drum brakes basically the same?

At this point with out removing the rear drums I am thinking the self adjuster's are missing there as well. I am no proffessional mechanic by no means, but I have to hand it to the prior owner(s) and there mechanical skills or lack there of.

I have no idea why anyone would remove these pieces, it really makes no sense. They shouldn't be to hard to replace used. There is no reason for them to ware out. Your only looking at four pieces per wheel two rods a pivot piece that screws to the brake shoe and a spring that adjusts the shoes. There are several people parting out jeeps all the time, just make some inquiries and it shouldn't take to long to locate what you need.

Will a later model 10" adjuster kit work, looks alittle different from the original. Are there any differences in the shoes from a 71 to a later model?
