Is there any flexibility in how the rear tank is positioned in order to control where the gas fill location is? I am planning on keeping my under seat tank and wanted to keep the fill locations on the same side of the vehicle.

Hmm, allthe older Jeeps I see have the filler on the passenger side, rear. I am not too sure you will find a tank that will fill from the driver side rear.

I think that the newer Jeeps fill from the left side, but I really don't know if they will fit since the newer ones have wider frames in the rear.

Just finished my conversion and was hoping I could put the filler on the driver side also. There is not enough room between frame rail and the body. By turning the tank 180 you put the tank filler toward the front of the jeep. Don't know about the newer frames but in the older ones the frame rail drops down before the rear bumper and that is the space you need for the filler pipe and hoses.

the PO of my cj6 did an m170 style gas tank and strapped two tanks in the mid section just behind where the front floor steps up to the rear floor. The two tanks were connected by a hose leaving room in between for the transfercase output yoke and driveshaft. I'm not sure if the tanks were custom or they were from an M170. The fillers were right next to each other.

If you are using a new steel tank, you could move the neck to the other side by unsoldering it from the tank and cutting/patching the appropriate holes.

If there ever was a CJ that used a driver side fill, that tank would probably fit. The earlier CJ tanks ca 1976-on will fit - see Boyinl's writeup. If only the Wrangler tank fills from the DS, then you'll need to measure, since the Wrangler frame may be wider than the CJ frame.
