Tranny/tcase woes

Hello to all,

I have faithfully maintained a stock '73 AMC for ten years now. Trouble began last season, noticed gear oil migrating from the trans to the transfercase with no external leaks. t14 would be 2oz low, d20 would be overfilled. Figured it was just a half-assed way of changing the fluid. Trans jumped out of 2nd a couple of times and the requisite whine became louder. Figured it was time for a rebuild. Farmed it out, figuring it was beyond my capabilities.

When I picked her up, shop forman told me to check tranny fluid and add if necessary. He told me that the transfer case would always be high because its fill hole is lower than the trans, which is true. Drove her home, thrilled with the results.

Tuned her up, full service lube and fluids in preperation of new season. Trans 2oz low, tranfer case excessively overfilled. Is it deja vu all over again? Am I beating myself about the head with a hammer?

I would appreciate sage advice.

 

The t14 does not have a seal between the transmission and the transfercase. What you are experiencing is normal, when you go up a hill the transfercase gets full, when you go down hill the transmission gets filled.

 

Uphill both ways I guess he he.

X2, Seems to be fairly common in several tranny/tcase set ups.

 

On mine the Input shaft on the tranny was shot.
But tranny oil was clean.
The Tcase had all the shavings from the tranny in the bottom of the pan.
Looked like thick metalflake.
