I have a '74 CJ5 w/ the 304 2bbl carb and 3spd man, my wife was driving it home and the engine died, she popped the clutch and it died after a few seconds. I went to jump it over as the new batt had died. I figured maybe a bad alternator, replaced that, still just turns over , replaced the spark plug wires, cleaned up the adequate looking cap rotor and coil. There is spark getting to the plugs as I tested acouple of them, looks adequate. Does anyone have any knowledge of a similar problem. Still have not checked the spark plugs to see if fouled. Changed oil the other day w/filter. Old oil was pretty bad. The vehicle sat for 15 months as the guy I bought it from was in Iraq like me. Any suggestions?

Typically "just died" problem is spark or fuel. Got gas in the tank? If so, if you have spark, I'd next look at the fuel pump. Put a little gas down the carburetor and see if it fires.

Or pull the fuel line off a the carb, crank it over and see if fuel spurts out. Or maybe it ran out of gas? A woman was involved e'h?

welcome to the board, would say either not getting fuel, and if it has points, would replace the condenser, its only a couple bucks, and when they go bad the engine can do some crazy things, a little deeper into it i would start to check timing, if its way off prob time for a timing chain

Check the fuel - it could have had crud in the lines by sitting.
