Some knucklehead torched off the caliper bolts and in the process blew out a section on the knuckle itself 1/4 to 1/3 of the bolthead surface, 1/8" deep +/- .

What should one do to fix this, I think the bolt would be unstable if ignored!!!

    Thanks, Dale

    I would replace the knuckle.

    :iagree:

Replacements are both cheap and available, not worth taking a chance IMHO.

I don’t stop by this section of the board often, but when I read the lead topic was “knuckle welding” I just had to stop and say any welding on the knuckle is a bad plan.
Besides the points already stated, were talking the steering here. This is not an area you want to monkey around with. Do it right and be done with it.

I tend to agree with not welding on something as important as a knuckle, this is a wide track Dana 30 kuck. and the steering arm is quite beefy! The problem area is where the caliper bolt (2 bolt) goes through the knuckle, I have thought about brasing as the slow heat up and cool down wouldn't set up to much stress in it. By the way just what is the knuckle material anyway, nodular iron, cast steel or what? That would be what is dictated as to a repair. I,m having a hard time finding just one pass. side knuckle!!! I feel if the right tecnique were applied it would be as good as...well almost new!

    Thanks, Dale

The knuckles are cast iron, and even if you had to buy a used pair it still isn't worth screwing around with welding one. These are your BRAKES for Pete's sake!

You can have a machine shop or welding shop weld it but cast iron has to be preheated to weld it properly and youd probrobly need to remove it anyway. You may as well get a new one
