so I understand that jeeps are noisy, but wow. My 6 w/ a 289, T18, D18 really is whiny above 1500 rpm's. I'm probably gonna put quieter mufflers on, but was giving thought to sound deadening the cab. The trans cover I modded to fit over the T18 doesn't leave much room for insulation below it.....wondering what others have done to midigate some of the noise levels
    any ideas?....thanks, Jim S.

yep I think carpet/insulation may be in order, pipes out the back w/ the new mufflers.
Anyone have success w/ any kind of sound deadening from underneath the tub?
I think the whine from the tranny/TC is what's most obnoxious
    Thanks, Jim S.

The Dana 18 turns all the time, so it's kind of noisy. This is why they called the Dana 20 the 'silent' transfer case. Even it is noisy compared to modern chain drive cases.

The gear whine should not be deafening though ... maybe your intermediate shaft/bearings are worn out? I believe that's pretty common with these.

Sorry to say, the T-18 is noisy too - though it should be quieter in top gear. 2nd and 3rd have a distinctive whine. 1st and reverse are just plain loud.

That whine is the T-18. I said the same thing to myself the first time I drove it on the highway after doing the conversion.

Line-x or Rhino line the tub and under carriage. Dyno Mat or put brown bread on the engine side and occupant side of the fire wall. I was thinking of doing Carpet as well. I dont really expect a JEEP to be quiet as a Lexus but my JEEP has a rather loud tinny noise level, adding a little density to the body panels I've found, goes a long way in trying keep the noise level down.

That's why I bought one

Think about it ... you can hear everything. It's not noise. It's music. The engine, the clutch, the tranny, the tcase, the driveshafts (slip joints, ujoints), the axles (diff and bearings), the body components, the floor pan covers, stuff that's in the glovebox, pebbles in the tires, stuff thrown in the back ... it's an orchestra ... one note out of tune though, you either solve it in your mind or pull it over :)

it'll always seem bad if you've just put a top on for the first time.
leaving the doors at home on nice Calif days helps

I added heat shields to the mufflers and noticed a big ruduction in over all noise.

If you have a metal hardtop, I have a solution as well, I painted pickup bedliner (the dupicolor stuff, not herc liner) on the sides and top and painted over that with auto trunk paint. the little bit I have been able to drive mine suggests that have made mine about 1/2 as loud as it was before. If I had a radio I might be able to hear it now.

The thick 'glass tub was a pretty good sound insulator on my rig, as were the thick Weathertech rubber mats. My T18 was still plenty loud, and so was the D18.
On trips of longer than an hour, I often wore foam earplugs.
After I started doing that, I realized I wasn't nearly as tired when I arrived at my destination compared to other trips to the same locale without earplugs. :)

I have never noticed my transfercase being overly noisy except in low range. The mufflers are loud though and don't get quiet until I'm cruising at a steady pace on flat land. It would be nice to have some insulation on the transmission cover though and I may do that. Also thought of just rhino lining the middle hump to help out with noise. Heck my tires make more noise than my transfercase.

I tried the sound deadening material on the tranny hump and I also had a thick rubber floor mat that went all the way across the front passenger section, with sound deadening material glued to the bottom of that. I couldn't tell a difference....

It did quiten down though when I rebuilt by D18 with a new mainshaft and bearings.
