just rebuilt the starter for cj5 f134. I can push the bendix back in about 1/2 inch, but it doesn't stay in. from where it is now it will extend about another 3/8 - 1/2 inch. IS it ok to mount it like this, or does it need to be retracted all the way? If so, how do I make it stay retracted? thanks, Bob

I suppose you could hit it with the jumper cables to make sure it is working, field test we'll call it.

i think this was discussed before.... cant rember if it was here or some where else, iirc the bendix is supposed to be extended upon instalation, when the motor fires it kicks the bendix out, i may be all wrong, but i think i read that somewhere in here, if it were me i would install it and start it up, hand on key ready to turn it back off if there was unsual noise, like a bendix that didnt disengage

OK thanks. That's what I'll try. I hope that was the problem.
