I have a 1966 CJ5 with I think a T90 3spd Tranny that just went bad. The tranny shop told me it would probably be cheaper to buy a rebuilt one. the input and output shafts need to be replaced along with some other gear parts. I have no idea where to find a rebuilt Tranny that will fit my Jeep. Should I stick with a 3 spd or should I go to a four sd? Is a salvage yard a mistake to search? Any reccomendations on places to look or any reccomendations on places to look for parts if I just tell them to rebuild the one I have? Thank you

Have you looked at craigslist? There are several site's that offer rebuilt tranny's. Olympic 4X4 the last time I looked offered rebuilts. T-90 there is a ton of info on rebuilding that tranny, have you by chance priced out all of the parts? Any questions in rebuilding all can be answered here.

Where you at? What engine you got? What transfer case? Are you sure it is a t-90? We could stop guessing, but then that wouldn't help.

Herm is a good resource as well as R&P at 503-557-8911. Both located in Pacific Northwest. You might also put an ad in the Classifieds section here. Knowing location is helpful to people on this board to help you. You will need to verify which transmission you have before buying.... If you post pics here we can help you identify what you have. if you have the :v6:, I recommend getting a t14 from herm (he'll take your t90 as a core).

I figured out I have a T-86 Tranny. I called several shops around here (phoenix) and no one carries a rebuilt one in stock. They said it might cost $600 to rebuild the one i have. where is the best place to find the parts cheap?

Follow the link Sparky gave you to Herm. He'll redo your T86 for $100+parts.
    Follow the link, be happy.

    I bought mine from Herm.
Switched to a sm420 and adaptor from Herm very good deal.
The T-86 is pretty light wieght.
After opening mine up and looking at it I knew I wasnt putting the samething back in.
Beings you have to pull it anyway you should consider your options.

Unless you know for certain your clutch is new,
Then plan on replacing it and resurfacing your flywheel.
This cost needs to be add'd to your plan.

Not to overwelm you but the Tcase will come out during this so I would want it looked at or rebuilt as an option.
If you switch to a different trans you probably will need different lenght drive shafts fabbed to.

The sm420 would need an adaptor and is more of a real good trail tranny.
The T-86 is a light street trans and has no syncro in first gear as you know.
You have some options and Herm will help you with that call him.

    I know one thing forsure.
Getting the right trans for your needs will be the best money you ever spend on your jeep.

I dropped my Tranny & Xfer case off at Herm's on Friday. Here is the way I see it, if folks like Sparky recommends Herm, and as you read the different post's related to trannies and poeple from coast to coast recommend Herm, you should contact Herm.
