OK, being jobless, I had the chance to go up to the girlfriends cabin and play with the Jeep.
Her mom wanted me to take it out and get the oil changed. Well with at least a foot of crusty snow in the driveway, and a huge berm from the plow (almost solid ice) I got the poor thing about 15 feet before it was resting on top of the snow, with all 4 tires spinning in the air, took the 5 of us to dig it out, but the Jeep got to stretch it's legs, as did my girlfriends family.

I got some pictures of it, and finally can show it off.:) Sorry no action shots.

Well it's my girlfriends dads, and he is no longer with us, no idea if he was planning on finishing the paint, or any other plans, other than eventually using it to plow the snow.

Very, very nice original CJ5. Think twice before you make any major modifications. You very rarely see them this original. I didn't notice any rust spots in the pictures. Make sure to give it a warm, dry home to keep it that way.

The two dash plaques are new to me. I'm familiar with the decal type, but have never seen the metal versions. Anyone familiar with these, and, are they factory, and are they still available?

    Nice Jeep.

Those brass tags are repops of what was on one of the military Jeeps (M38-A1?). Note the transfer case shift pattern is for the factory twin stick.

A little momentum would have popped you right over that snow berm

The original color is 'Jet Set Blue' - an excellent factory color. If it were mine, I'd lose the white respray and put it back to the original color.

The only mods I would do would be paint, find a nice hard top, and maybe a winch.
Other than that, I love it the way it is.
It has superlift springs, I forgot to check the shackles, and other than the rims and bumpers, it looks to be bone stock. I have pictures of inside the tool box too, and only a little surface rust on the walls. next time I get up there, I'll give that a little squirt of oil/wd40

Well I have looked online, here and elsewhere, and have found out only a fraction of what I want to know.
Made in Toledo, it's a 1974, has the 258 I6 standard compression, and the name of the factory color(thanks Tim)
I was hoping to find out more using the VIN, like find out what trans/tcase (either t-14 or t-15, and the d20 tcase) and the axles but other than "3spd" there is no info that I have been able to find with the VIN.

If anyone can help me out with anything, even the somewhat trivial stuff from pictures (like the carb) it would be much appreciated.

I am the only one that CAN drive a manual, but it's been in their family since '92 give or take. So it's mine to drive, theirs to own for now, I guess it will be mine if I marry my girlfriend, but that's a lot of commitment just to score a Jeep. (I love her, and probably will marry her, but just not now)

    If it's a 258, it has a T-14. In CJs, the T-15 was only used with the 304 V8.

The axles are Dana 44 rear, Dana 30 front, either 3.73 (std) or 4.27 (opt) ratio. Look for a tag under the axle cover bolts for the ratio. There may also be a tag on the rear axle identifying a 'limited slip' differential (a common option).

The VIN will tell you the model/type, engine, transmission, hard top or open body, and GVWR.

I guess at this point its a combination of how much you love her and how much you love the jeep.
Both are very rewarding and very expensive. :)

I'm glad to hear that dowrys are coming back!!

Your carb is a Carter YF..one barrel w/choke stove. It was used in ALOT of vehicles over the years so parts are readily available. Some would say that its a lousy carburetor and should be replaced with various other arrangements or even fuel injection.

Personally, I think its a pretty good set-up. My 258 w/YF starts well with a higher idle (say 1000-1500 RPM, depending on temperature) until she warms up. Blip the throttle, kicks off of the choke cam and settles in to about 700 RPM. Sometimes a little hesitant on a hot restart, but all in all...very reliable and I average about 16 MPG...not too shabby....

Whatever you do, don't trade in your original for a rebuilt one (as a core charge). The rebulids are not near the quality of an original that has factory matched components. If your carb is presenting problems, spend 10-15 bucks for a quality rebuild kit and go from there.

There's nothing wrong with the YF except that it's a little small for 258 cid. Certainly one of the better carburetors available.

You might go to a larger carburetor (and a different manifold), for performance reasons. EFI has its own advantages - reliability, economy, performance, drivability, and especially for a Jeep, you can shake it mercilessly and hold it at any angle and it will still work flawlessly.

The carb seems to be working flawlessly, even restarting after warmed up. As soon as the ignition switch made contact, it was running, scary fast startup. I think just because it is her dads I wont be making very many changes even if it became mine. It works like it should, and as long as I can keep it running like that, I'll be happy.
Maybe a rebuild on the engine, and finish the paint (the girlfriend said she wanted him to paint it red) the hardtop, winch, and maybe the snow plow, I would like to find out all the little plans he had for it, and finish it for him.
