I think this is an easy question. :) I was hoping someone could tell me the original tire diameter on my 1973 CJ5. I'm running 33" tires with a 3" lift and I'm trying to make a decision on which gear ratio to use. The jeep has the original 3.73 gears, and I'm trying to
decide whether to run 4.27's or 4.56's.

Unless I'm missing something, the original tire diameter is irrelevent. You need to determine optimum gearign for how you want to use the JEEP, and then make your speedometer more or less accurate, no?

Pretty sure it was H78-15 Goodyear Polyglass Suburbanite, not L78-15. Someone could check one the sales literature frm thos years to be sure. My reference http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/2398/tires/tirediam.htm says the H78-15 was 28.34" in diameter.

Note that you could get smaller tires from the factory, but where I worked, only the larger tires had any value as take-offs, so they never ordered CJs with the smaller tires. I'd expect the large majority of the Jeeps sold came through with the optional larger tires.
