Lefty tighty? Righty Losey?

I tried searching here and didnt find anything on this.....

It appears that on my '46 CJ2a one wheel, out of the 4, has reverse thread wheel studs/lugs...... the other 3 are normal.

I went to remove the two driver side wheels (i have new skinney small tires (town and country's) to replace the odd old ones, hadn't had a chance to put them on till now) and i noticed that 2 of the rear lugs were broken off.....not the end of the world....so i start messing with the remaining 3 to get them off.....not wanting to break them i start trying to go a little forward and then backward again......to work em loose.... anyways....i notice they are backwards....

I'm going to replace them.....since 2 are broken...so i'm just going to match the other 3 wheels......I'm not sure how to do this, but i'm sure it cant be that hard....



anyway......so is this normal? was this how they came originally and the others have been replaced? seems really weird

 

Yes, drivers sides were always reverse thread until 3A's IIRC
Could have been that the front was replaced with a later axle with all common threads.

 

wow....so the driver side was different than the passenger side from the factory?

that doesnt seem like a good idea at all..for manufacturing and owning......especially if they did that on a military jeep. just more parts to order and keep track of.

Seen at least as late as '63 myself. Definitely changed over before '69.

 

thing a 1 ton arbor press would work? or should i use a bigger hydraulic shop press
....i need to get one anyways

 

IIRC the end of the stud has a "R" or "L" stamped into it to indicate right or left hand turn. At least me 2A had the letter stamped into the end of the stud.

 

The left handed lug nuts was not a jeep thing, Chrysler was still doing this in 1969. Most auto manufactures had done away with the idea by the late 50's early 60's though, jeep and Chysler just hung on longer than most.

 

My '65 has em on the drivers side...somehow my front drivers side has four like this and one the normal way....lots of swearing at Jeep gods for this

 

im sure that this si the reason the other two lugs are busted off....some one along the way didnt know what they were...

now i need to go check and see what kind of front axle i have instead of taking it for granted that i have the stock front.

 

my spare front (dana 25) has the left hand studs with an "L" stamped on the center.
