I tried for a search, didn't have any luck and I hope this is the right forum??

I was wondering who uses what brand of ring and pinion gears? I am running a d30 front and flanged rear d44. I looking at 5.38 gears.

Another question that comes to mind is, I have heard the contraversy of tooth count for strength, more is better but to me that sounds like it would start with something like a 4.27 43/11 tooth count vs. 5.38 at 43/8 ??

    Your thoughts ??

    Thanks, Dale

I've heard of the pinion stregnth concerns. It has alot more to do with how much power you are putting throught them, and shock loads. Jeeps are relatively light, and unless you have some engine poerformance mods, you're not likely to break a pinion before your u-joints fail, in the front, and the rear d44 is plenty strong in any gear ratio for a jeep with factory power.

As for gear brands, you can go wrong with genuine dana/spicer parts. I've also heard good things about yukon. The G2 brand is supposed to be easier set up and quieter.

I'm still factory in mine though, so i can't vouch by experience.

I've set up a lot of gears over the years. I'd go factory Spicer/Dana if possible. Second choice would be Yukon. I've had very good luck with ease of set up and longevity with them. Plus, Randy Ring and Pinion's customer service and prices are excellent for what you get. Nickmil

If you can afford the Spicer gears that would def. be your best bet. If not you cant go wrong with Yukons. Also if you need a quote on some shoot me a pm, the shop I work at is a master dealer for Randys, so I can save you some $$$ ;)

have the yukon on the rear axle. no issues.

as far as the tooth strength works: the more teeth that are in contact with each other, the stronger it is. that means a 3.73 is stronger than 5.38, as the 3.73 has more teeth in contact than the 5.38.

    Thanks, I have done bus. w/ Randys (3.50 9" w/trutrac).......pleased!

I'm surprized that all the gear jammers didn't pick up on my tooth count goof...4.27 is 47/11 not 43/11!

But anyway, when I have the d44 in my hands I will definitely do biz wiz Randy.

    Again thanks, Dale

I like Randy's as well for their service and have the Yukon 5.38's in the back of my A1. I have also set up Motiv's, Richmonds, and Strange/US gear. Only a couple of gear manufacturers for all of the retailers.

Even though the 3.73 has more gear teeth in contact, it requires more load to turn. The 5.38's mechanical advantage reduces the load on the fewer teeth. In the end it is mostly a push.
