Up until today I thought I had a T 90 tranny. I removed my D 18 xfer case and plan on replacing all of the seals due to what appears to alot of leakage. So I figured since I have the xfer case off, why not remove the tranny. Come to find out it is a T 14, spending on and off today searching the net on info about this tranny I am pondering a rebuild.

My reasons for a rebuild is that during my limited driving the jeep earlier this fall, it had jumped out of 1st while going down hill, and then today I removed the drain plug to find what seemed to me alot of metal attached to the plug. I reached into the drain hole to find more metalic sluge. I talked to my brother who said I would worry that much about the metal shaving's. Looking at the gears with the top removed the gears look fine. It could be late prior owner(s) of this jeep didn't change the fuilds much, I don't know.

My other thought in not rebuilding is limited info on rebuilding this tranny, it seemed fine other than jumping out of gear once, and I could flush the tranny and just clean it up.

Any thoughts on what you would do?

If it were me, I'd find a T98 with a granny first and swap it in. Here is a little info

The Borg Warner T98/T98A used by Ford (1948-64) and Jeep (1955-72) can be identified by a case length of 11 7/8" and a case casting number of T98A. It is a heavy duty transmission with tower shift and iron case and cover. The T98A and T18 are easily confused because they are externally identical. Differences in the T18, the T98 has a 6.40 first gear, a bronze bushing under third gear, loose rollers under second gear and less main drive pilot bearings. Because of the T98's low first gear, length, durability and easy adaptability , it is very popular with rock crawlers and anyone wanting a good dependable transmission.
With minor alterations to the front of the case and bearing retainer, the T98 will bolt up directly to an AMC, GM or Ford bell housing. Then with the large selection of transfer case adapters, it will fit almost any combination. These transmissions are available all set up and ready to bolt in.

Well then I say rebuild it. No need to start adapting all kinds of stuff that will only complicate the build( trust me on this one)

If you decide to go with a 4 speed swap, the T-98 is nice but from what I have seen they are very expensive. I bought a SM 420 for $50 then had to buy the Novak adapter for another $600. As mentioned earlier you might want to keep your T-14.:) Good Luck.

I'd pull it and rebuild it while you have the transfer case out. Herm the overdrive guy sells the T-14 rebuild kit for ~100 bux, making the T-14 one of the cheapest trannys around to rebuild.

Herm's site: www.hermtheoverdriveguy.com

BTW- when you go to put it back together, it's usually easier to bolt the tranny to the transfer case and then use a jack to lift the whole banana back in as a unit. ;)

I have been in Herm's site, and many other's and the parts and rebuild kit are available, but unlike the T90, and the in the Rebuilders Manual I can not find anything in writing as a guide to rebuild it. In the Rebuilders Manual when it talk's about the T14 it states "refer to any professional-level service manual covering that era (1967-1971)". I have snet hours and hours today searching for some type of guide, maybe I am not searching correctly. With out something I am not that willing to take it apart.

Any help, or suggestions on a rebuild guide for the T14 would be helpful to say the least.

Thanks again
Dave

Not an authority on T-14 trans or T-90s for that matter but I've rebuilt some saginaws and muncies. Manual trans are very easy to rebuild, definitely nothing to shy away from. The Technical Library here has a guide to rebuilding the T-90 by Rick Stivers (Willys Tech) and I believe there is little difference between it and the T-14 (one synchro is all I think). Many guys have rebuilt their's here and I'm sure they would provide all the help you would need (and correct me if I'm wrong).:v6:

Like Rocky said there isn't enough difference with the T14 that you won't be able to figure out what to do. The best thing you can have is an exploded parts view, if you can't find a rebuild guide. When you take it apart pay close attention to everything. Have your new parts laid out so you can compare them with old stuff, that alone makes a tremendous difference and helps with understanding how it works, what thrust washers do, and how to put it back together. Lay stuff out in order of how it goes together, which way it faces, etc. It's not really that difficult, just be organized in what you do, and if unsure about something ask before you put it together. Pictures with questions help tremendously. :):coffee:

Thanks Glenn & Rocky I was looking at the T90 and my T14 thinking that there isn't that much of a difference. I have a exploded view of the T14, along with a camera, and the smartest people in the world at my side, I think this could be done. Thanks again to all. When I start and run into question's I will be posting them.

Alot of suppliers are just taking your rebuild kit from one box and putting it in another to ship too you.

Herm rebuilds tranny's ect.
He will make sure you get a complete kit for your tranny.

Buy from Herm.. IMHO.

I have and the differance is apparent right away.

Call him and tell him exactly what you have and need, he'll know what to ask so you get the right kit.

Sound's like Herm is held in high regards here, and offers customer service to boot. I think Herm is only a few hours from me any how...Herms the guy I will contact when I start my rebuild, and will mention that he came highly recommended from this site and all who make it what it is.

Thanks again to all who have replied

Mcruff Thank you for the offer, and I will PM you if I need anything.

I am thinking that my game plan will be to contact Herm and see if I can bring him look it over to buy what is needed to rebuild it. Take a ton of photo's during the take down to help with the rebuild.

I recently rebuilt my T14 and it wasnt bad at all. I have no experience with this, but used the FSM and it went fine. The hardes part is getting the proper tools to take the bearings off. Go slow and keep things clean and its really not to bad.
