I have a 66' CJ5 that I am in the middle of putting power steering on. I have a Chevy 350 motor and the gentlemen I bought the jeep from gave me a steering pump and gear box out of an 80's chevy truck. Here's my question.... I want to put the gear box onto my jeep but I don't think the pitman arm will fit the chevy gear box and also to my tie rod end. The pitman arm that is currently attached to the chevy gear box is bigger in diameter at the attachement point than the pitman arm that was attached to my old manuel gear box. Are the shafts that come out of gear-boxes different sized for manual and power steering? Whats my best bet... getting a newer gear box out of a wrangler or newer CJ or do they make pitman arms that are big on one end to fit the larger chevy gear box and smaller on the other end to fit the small tie rod end on the jeep?

A CJ with power steering pitman arm should suit your needs. And yes, the shaft is larger for the power steering box. CJs use the same power steering box as chevy. But there are some minor variances between them. The only issue I would forsee is possibly the alignment spline may be different. I know my alignment spline is a tad off but not enough to effect function. The alignment spline can be ground out to allow indexing the pitman arm anywhere.

The steering box out af a Chevy truck might not work because it is mounted on the outside of the frame.

In refference to "jeep Therapys" comment.... do you think I should get a jeep CJ power steering pitman arm.. or should i get a CJ power steering box? Stores are telling all sorts of things (I need a new larger tie rod to fit the larger pitman arm... or I should find a pitman arm that fits both ends, but I can't b/c they are different sizes on both ends... etc) i dont know which way to go

The path of least resistance would be to get a steering box from a later CJ or Wagoneer/Jeep Pu with the pitman arm. Then the tie rod end hole would be correct and you'd have a box mounted inside the frame protected and not have to worry about the tires hitting the box when the suspension flexes, easier hook up to the steering column, etc. Do a search here as it's been covered pretty exhaustively.
