Hi everybody. I am having a bit of a problem with the steering wheel in my jeep. The weight of the steering rod (pulling down on the steering wheel) is casuing my steering wheel to grind up against the metal tube covering the rod. If I get the steering wheel tight like it should be, it rubs and will stick. I was going to post some pics, but my pc wasn't cooperating. Thanks for the help!

Sounds like you might need a new upper column bushing.

there is a spring that goes in there to that keeps the column pushed up. i had the same problem, replaced the spring and all is good now no rubbing and the column is pushed up and tight. the spring goes on the shaft before you put the steering wheel on.

Thanks so much for the help! I've pulled the steering wheel off and there was no spring. Thanks again!

Where would you go about getting a replacement spring?

not to sure, maybe Northstar willys, call them and tell them what you are looking for. they may be able to get one for you or steer you in the right direction. Sorry for not being to much help on this

I don't remember any springs in mine just a ball bearings and a race. If you missing some you can order them from mc master carr. The lower bearing is a plastic bushing, i make a new one out of a pvc plumbing fitting.

I would almost bet that you could get something "close" to the factory spring at a hardware store in the misc spring selection. I don't think it would have to be exact...just puts a little pressure on it to keep it from doing what yours is doing.

Grant steering wheel adaptors come with one. I agree w/ mcgillacuddy, get a 1 1/2" to 2" spring with a little give from hardware store.
