OK. someone please explain this to me. I tried to take off my tires for the first time today. And to my astonishment the threads, on two of the tires, are backwards. Righty loosy lefty tighty. The front pass. side and the rear driver side.

    Why are they like that?

    Re: Righty Loosy WTF?

Ummm the front is wrong. Only the drivers side is left hand threads. Why is it like that... so Old Jeepers can haze new Jeepers who don't know that ;) Kidding.

At one time, so the story goes, engineers believed that reverse threads on one side would keep the nuts secure, as the wheels rotated in the opposite direction.

But, in the real world, people eventually noticed that loose lug nuts weren't really an issue to begin with.

I still think it's jeep-cool. I was once able to tell a good friend I would "give him my left nut."

Most likely someone had both front hubs off and installed them on the wrong sides. I even did it myself without thinking before.

If you really want to mess with a future owner, replace SOME of the RH studs with LH ones. DAMHIK.

Yes the theory only really applies to cars with a single center hub nut like the old mgs or most race cars. When i first picked up my jeep i had to swap out some of the wheels to drag it home on a dolly. the owner wasnt present to tell us otherwise but we tried for quite some time and finally my brother tried tightening them to break them loose sometimes it works and off they came we were amazed :)

Note to jeepers - on the old ones there is a little L stamped in the LH Studs... :)

I went to pick up some rims from someone on the board here once and it even got me. Took us about 20 minutes of tightening to figure out what the deal was:oops:

On my '56, not only do the studs have the "L" stamped on them, but the nuts say "LEFT" on them too.

Yeah unless rust has made the end of the stud unreadable that works.

If rust hasn't destroyed it the LH threaded lug nuts usually have a groove around the circumference of the nut also. My first car, '69 Dodge Dart and a later a '70 Dodge Dart also had left hand lug studs/nuts. Nickmil
