the po of my jeep used 3 inch square tubing for the body lift. this has caused some damage to the stringers under the body. i have found where i can get the stringers, the question i have is about the body mounts themselves. i ordered what was advertised to be a complete set of polyurethane mounts. what i got are 14 (i would need to count again but i believe that is how many) disks about the size of a hockey puck. i am not wanting any body lift just some give between the body and frame. is this all that the 73's had, those with a bolt through them or should i have more? thanks for any input, pictures of proper mounts would be very helpful.

The poly is what you want. By the time you squish them down they don't really provide much lift. Stock in many cases was just a piece of tire rubber sandwiched in there.

there wasnt any rubber that went below the frame? looking at newer mounts there is the puck between the body and frame and another piece that goes below with a metal bushing through all of it. did this year not have that?

Can't help you there...I was doing my '64 and all there was was the rubber tire chunk and a bolt. I put the poly in with stainless bolts - but I do seem to recall someone mentioning something between the bolt head and body mount.

Mine had what I would describe as fender washers on either side of the rubber. It looked torn up enough to have been stock but no way for me to know.

IIRC a '72 will have rubber pucks with a big washer on either side, and a bolt going through the middle. A couple of the front ones are thicker (?) and have a tube in the middle of them. I can take alook in the daylight for more detail.

Not to high-jack Caliguy, but where did you source the stringers? Mine are mostly held together with mud.

Were you able to find a kit with the SS bolts or did you have to buy the bolts separately. I need to do that job and haven't found a kit with bolts.

I bought the complete SS kit from 4WDH that had a few of the bolts, but had to buy some additional ones as well - I can't recall exactly but the kit seemed 1 or 2 shy, plus the 6's have two more body mounts to accomodate.

The bolts that came with mine weren't right so I went to Sears Hardware and bought Grade 8s.

Maybe I didn't think it through enough...but it didn't seem like high-grade bolts were necessary. Heck - on my CJ5 there was only one bolt doing any good anyway...R)

I'm in the process of putting new polyurethene mounts on my 75. The kit I'm planning on using is by Energy Suspension . No bolts come with the kit and I've already removed a few of the bolts on the jeep. Even though my CJ is pretty clean, the bolts definately need replacing; can't imagine reusing. The ones I've removed are in pretty bad shape with galling and rust. They all have 3 hash marks on the top of the bolt indicating Grade 5.

Not positive but this is a tenative rundown

All the bolts are 9/16" diameter with varying lengths from 2" to 4.25". Most take nuts, some thread into welded body pieces and I believe the two just in front of the rear shocks just take nuts on 9/16" studs.

Total of 15 locations for the body mounts on the CJ5 and 17 for the CJ6, but some of them take two bushings.

A good hardware store should have all the bolts/nuts and washers you will need. I'm planning on buying all new hardware with plenty of extra various sized washers. Here in Atlanta there is an old-timey hardware store called Howard Brothers on Buford Hwy that has all this stuff.....one of my favorite places to shop.

I just got the same brand kit. Mine has 14 pieces, it's for a '55-'7? CJ5 ... closest I could get.
My bolts appear to be 3/8". The pucks have a 9/16" hole though. I'm expecting to be making/buying a bunch of washers and buying new gr5 bolts.

I've got R & L steel brackets directly above the rear axle that are rivited to the frame and butt up to the tub, that I believe to be for machine gun mounts, that I really hope aren't spot welded to the tub ... may need to buy more beer.

Hmm, just consulted Ludel's book. He says replacing the OEM flat pads with anything of appreciable thickness will require mods of pedal holes and "other" adjustments, but doesn't elaborate. My new pucks are 5/8" thick ... anyone know if there will be conflicts and what they might be?

Executive decision: Just cut them in half on the table saw ... perfect 1/4" pads :)

The only thing I ran into was having to lower my radiator a 1/2" as the fan contacted the lower hose. The holes were there already so it was a quick fix.

IMHO there's enough slop in the pedals and pedal holes that it wouldn't be an issue.
