d 20 Transfer Case

I have a 1971 CJ5 with the v6 engine. Somewhere along the Jeep's life it received a centered rear axle and a model 20 transfer case. I had a spare t14A that I just rebuilt as the one in the Jeep was in pretty bad shape.

My question is this. How do I remove the d20 case? Unlike the d18 there is not an inspection plate to open to remove the transmission drive gear. Do you just un bolt the 5 bolts holding it to the transmission and slide it off or is there some other method?

Thanks, it sounds easier than the d18. Where is the bolt in front?

It's on the passenger side. Usually covered in crud. The bolt head faces to the front. It can be a bugger to get a wrench on.

Yup, this is the bolt that if you do not remove and try to pry the case off, you will crack the case.

I think someone had changed mine along the way. It works well but I'm changing back to d18 and an offset.

The offset gives you a better rear shaft angle and better gearing. i went back to a 18 2 years ago :)
