My 1960 cj5 f head has a small valve on the rear of the head near the valve cover. It directs coolant to the heater core. I was loosing coolant in the spring and had no heat, so I tried closing the valve...no more coolant loss. Now that it's getting colder, I opened it the other day...had instant heat, but coolant started running out the pressure valve/radiator cap within a few minute drive. Is this normal? or is there a problem somewhere? Is there anything I should check?

It sounds like trapped air that's turning to steam. Have you tried leaving the valve open, letting the engine cool completely down? When cold the level in the radiator should be around 1.5 inches below the top of the radiator.
