My 1970 CJ5 was previously owned by someone with limited tools and limited mechanical knowledge, by the condition of certain repairs. On my Dana 44 rear end are shims between the axle tube and brake back plate. What do they shim? Each side was done differently (missing parts etc.) so I don't know exactly how to re-construct the crime scene. Thanks in advance.

That type of shim is used to adjust the pinion angle... I would take it to zero (no shims) and do some measuring.

if it was between the tube and the spring you'd be right. I think he's looking at the shims that set end play on the axles. I know somebody here will post up an exploded view of the components. Time to get a repair manual.
