    *ANSWER* Read post #7

Got the Jeep running again thanks to some members of the forum. Took it for a test drive yesterday, and oh boy did that not work. When the Jeep is underload above appx 30mph, it starts bucking/surging/backfiring. When I'm on flat sections it works just fine until 30 MPH, when there was an incline or I try to accelerate to quickly, it would start doing what I just described. Anyone ever had this problem? I've only had a stutter when the engine is cold and I try to accelerate in 2nd gear, never anything like this.

almost sounds like a timing issue. what's the timing set at, along with the dwell?

Is a plug not firing? That is the same symptom my car had when I had lost one plug.

That sounds like a vacuum advance problem. When it is under load it needs more advance to pull. Had an old D50 that did that, ran fine unless going up hill or accelerating. Cleaned the advance and plate and it solved the problem. But a vacuum leak would do the same thing.

I'll do a check for vacuum leaks... that might actually be it. It was dark & I kept hearing a clicking sound from above the water pump area. I did regap the plugs to .28, could that be to little?

My Jeep did something similar but hasn't done that lately with no repairs either. I did some checking on here and my symptoms at least lead me to believe it was related to a vacuum leak so you might want to start there.

Just to help others out, the problem was incorrect float settings! Sadly, I just figured that out last night after so many months of working on it. The gas level was only 1/8-1/4" above the jets. I ended up replacing my Prestolite with an HEI distributor yesterday assuming that was the problem, sure wasn't, but the Jeep runs like a dream now. I highly recommend the HEI distributor to anyone, cost me $201 for everything NEW. Thanks to everyone for their input & help. I learned a lot about carbs (Fuel Injection guy) & the Jeep in general.
