I ordered rims for my jeep and there 5x5.5 3.75 backspacing. I got rims from the junk yard all happy for cheap and found out after mounting the tires that the center was smaller. I measured the center, it's 4.25 inches. I hope the rims I ordered from 4wd hardware are right. Whats the backspacing? The depth?

sagegoat, sounds like you might have picked up some late modle Jeep wheels. They have a smaller hub opening than what we use. Also, here is a pretty good article at FourWheeler.com on backspacing and offset. It explains it much better than I could. http://www.fourwheeler.com/techarticles/wheels/129_0602_wheel_backspacing_etiquette/index.html

Old Ford 2WD pickup truck wheels are also 5 on 5.5", but they have a smaller center hole. In the olden days, wheel makers used the Ford wheels for wide Jeep wheel centers, and cut out the center. Not the best option, since they tended to crack.

I thought that the newer Jeep wheels (ie YJ, TJ, XJ, etc.) are all 5 on 4.5", and any Jeep 5 on 5.5" would fit.

Hmmm... maybe I had better re-measure the ones in my shop, I could have swore they were 5x5.5 off a newer XJ, but I didn't bring them home myself (my son brings home tires and wheels like some people bring home stray cats!) LOL.
