Is there any manufacturer that produces a lockout shifter for a 3spd?
I am not too used to driving a 3 speed, and have twice now tried to go from first to reverse.
Habits from my last car where the front left position was first, and reverse was the back right.

The Jeep is a 74 CJ5, straight 6, single stick TC.
I don't know what kind of transmission, I will try and get my girlfriend to take a picture of the VIN plate.

    trans probably a T14
no help for that trans (or any of the Borg Warners) that I know of
when shifting out of first to second, try putting slight sideways pressure on the shift lever
that way when you hit the crossover spot in the pattern, it should go the direction you need
sorry to not be more helpful, all I can think of

Actually, it happens when I try and "downshift" into reverse....

First to second is no problem.

How about a big shift diagram on the dash?

I go back and forth between the VW and the Jeeps - a couple of times I've started to shift into "1st" in my pickup. It makes some noise, probably doesn't hurt anything at normal shifting speeds. I wouldn't worry about it.

I also try to set/release the foot brake in the VW...

Yeah, it was really low speed when I did it. I'm sure after a while it wont happen any more.

Funny side note, last week I was driving a Mazda 6 rental, had the manual automatic. I was just having fun, took off from a stoplight, wound it up to 6-7k rpm, then went to shift, and slammed on the brake so hard the anti-locks kicked in. And I am an adult too, now I know why they won't let people under 25 rent most of the time.

I normally do that when pulling into a parking spot. Lucky for me most of my friends either drive stick or used to drive stick so they understand.

Usually the only stick i drive is my cj, so when i get in another vehicle, i'm prepetually starting out in second gear!

You get used to the 3 speed, and after 30 some odd years or grinding reverse, they still seem to work, so i wouldnt worry.

    Cant find 'em? GRIND 'EM!!!
