    ok...i should know this being an engineer who's done designs with sheet metal.....
    :oops:

    but whats the technical term for when you drill/cut a hole in sheet metal....and then press out the area around the hole in order to give the piece of sheet metal more rigidity.

    i'll know it when i hear it...but i cant think of it! argh!

    thanks :oops::oops:

    its like a counter sink thats pressed in on one side...and that pushes the other side out....

    its a press operation that creates a flare....and i'm almost certain theres a technical term for it....but i cant remember!!

    this is bugging me

    i must just be going crazy...

    oh well.....

    I have the idea to use flared/dimpled holes to reduce the weight on the frame boxing on the 6......trying to find dies that will work for that heavy of metal

    just an idea for now

    sammy Coca-Cola?

    Careful... You may pack with mud and then they'll rust through on both the frame rails and the boxing... It would make sense for weight though. Also, if one is to crack, the crack will stop in the hole.

    I vote for dimpled, countersunk flairs. :)

    I did a quick Google and couldn't find anything obvious...

    If you are worried about mud and rust, wouldnt you be able to weld a very thin gauge sheet over the holes? It may take away from the total weight loss, but will prevent any mud or water from entering.

    I believe in the aircraft industry, they're called "lightening holes".
