I just finished bleeding my new front disc brakes! My heep is a 71 so I have a dual master, I dont feel a need to fool with that. My queery is the rear brakes. I havent even taken off the back wheels yet but want to ask BEFORE on this project. Do I rebuild the stock set up or are there any cool options? I would go to disc but I dont feel my pavement pounding requires all that expense. thanks guys

You should have 10" self adjusting brakes on the rear which should work well with the front discs. Your options are 11" drums or discs. I went with discs for the cool factor and I don't like drums.

I did four wheel disc brakes on a cj3a I had. Worked out well. Just need the parts from two 78 cj's with disc.

You can also adapt disk brakes from something else is you wanted. We built a full float Ford 9" for my TJ and we used the spindles, hubs, bearings, rotors, calipers and pads from a '77 F150 front Dana 44. Fabbed up an adaptor plate and bolted everything together.

I've got disk on the front with the dana 30 and factory 10" drums on the back - works well. You may want to check your bias and if needed put in an adjustable proportioning valve.

I did front and rear disks on one of my jeeps. On the other jeep I did front disk rear 10" drums. The second one seems to work much better than the one with four wheel disks. The nice part of the four wheel disks is they don't hold all the crap that the drums do after running mud. The only reason I did four wheel disks on the one was because my backing plates were shot and I couldn't find replacements at a decent price.

Did you use semi-metallic pads or organic pads on the 4 wheel discs? Using organic pads makes a huge difference in pedal pressure and makes the brakes work much better. Doesn't wear out the rotors as bad either. Semi-metallics are designed to be used with a power booster. Nickmil
