My jeep is a 3 speed, the next shifter is the front axle, is it supposed to be forward while street driving or pulled back? which way is engaged and disengaged? I know my third shifter is 4h n 2h 4L.

The third one isn't 2/4wheel as you indicated. It's only high-low, though with a V6 you should have a single stick shifter. :?

But if you have three, do you have an overdrive?

    No jeep TC w/ that shift pattern. A d20 is 4h 2h n 4l, the closest.:v6:

Ok, again, it's an overdrive. :D

See my first response where I posted shift patterns for you and refer to my e-mail reply.

I has nothing to do with front axle engagement. You're quite lucky to have one and have a very nice Jeep to boot.

That's an overdrive and not a PTO engagement handle?:?

Seems awful far over to be reaching and shifting from the drivers seat - and surely not while moving at any speed down the road!:):flag:

X3. Definitely an OD. A PTO would be down next to the driver's seat. ;)

This has nothing to do with the OD shifter, but what kind of "boot" is that on the xfer case shifter, and where can I get one? :):)

When I first saw pictures of his Jeep I thought it was a OD as well. I was thinking it seemed a long way to reach over to shift it. My Jeep has a hole in the same place, but no lever and I have a twin stick transfer case on my 71. I have always wondered if mine did have a OD.

My thought also (Long way to reach).
You aren't engaging and dis engaging that over drive while you are in motion. Not unless you have a passenger along who can reach it.:):hurrican::flag:

:? Looks like it's where I've seen other OD's that I've driven. It wasn't that far to reach.

This sounds like you are thinking the little short lever close to the firewall is the OD shifter. That's the single lever for 4WD. The longer one to the right of the tranny shift lever is for OD.

The short shifter in the picture, that is up toward the firewall is the factory shifter for a v6 transfercase.
To answer Russ's question that is a factory looking boot for the shifter and its really not much more than a piece of rubber with a flange around it and asingle hole in it. I still had my factory one until I changed to a twin stick setup.
Indeed what everyone said is correct the 2nd tall shifter is in the factory position for an overdrive, its definately not for the transfercase.
