I have a 74 CJ5 with 258, about a month ago it starting stalling and there was gas all over the outside of the carb. Before that it ran fine.

I figured it was a stuck float valve, and rebuilt the carb, carefully measuring the float position per the specs, etc.

Put it back together. It cranks right up, but immediately stalls and gas leaks out.

Anyone know what else could be wrong? I don't want to replace the carb as this jeep has everything original except the fuel pump, battery and some of the light bulbs.

    Thanks

take it apart and check if the floats filling with gas. I once got a float from the parts store that leaked. Gave me the same problem, leaky carb= new float (and rebuild) = leaky carb AGAIN = another new float= problem solved. This was a 258 with a carter carb.

I had the same problem at one time with my YF.

My YF had worn float hinges and would drag along the sides of the bowl and stick. It was also important to follow the tighening sequence on the top.

I though I had it fixed because it would not flood out right away at idle but driving it was another problem. Found out my version of the YF had the bowl vent in the bore and one going to the evap canister. I plugged the one going to the evap and that lould lower the pressure in the bowl allowing greater force on the needle seat forcing it open. I could restart it and it would be fine until I went to full throttle again. Then it would flood out and stall. Restart it and it would run great. I removed the plug from the end of the float bowl vent and worked great. I reconnected it to the evap canister.

Eventually I used the proper fuel filter with the bypass fuel line and I havn't had a problem since. knock knock.

Been a while since i ran a YF but i remember having a similar problem.
Id pull it apart and check and see if your float is binding up somewhere, or it has a hole in it.

I found a site where a guy in Colorado Springs has a kit to install a 2100 on those 6 bangers.. Don't have the link at the moment but I am sure a google search will find it.

I managed to get the float valve adjusted by eye (luck!), instead of using the measurements, now it's running smoothly again, no leaks.

Thanks for all the responses, this is a great site!
