I've been trying to get my emergency brake to work so I can get the CJ to pass the state inspection. I thought the big problem was that the unit was covered in oil from the leaking output shaft on the tranfer case. I replaced the seals and cleaned everthing with brake cleaner but it still won't hold on the hill in my driveway. Also I adjusted the shoes closer to the drum but the drum can get pretty hot if if the shoes make even the slightest contact with it. I've checked the archives without sucess. Any suggestions?

Hows the surface of the shoes? If they're glazed they won't hold. Also, you may have to do more to get the oil off of them than using brake cleaner, the surface layer may be just to contaminated to hold.

Bringing the shoes closer won't really help you much, all your really doing is changing how far out you have to pull the handle before they make contact.

I'd suggest new shoes & having the drum turned just enough to roughen up the surface a bit. Even at that these setups were marginal for holding power, I don't think that even at 100% perfect they could reliably hold against the power of an F4, never mind a V6.

Howard, Thanks for your reply. I think you're right. I'm going to have take it apart again change out the shoes and turn the drum.

If you need to rebuild it check Herm out. I got one from him for $65.

You can sometimes restore oil-soaked brake shoes by soaking them in clean solvent for a while. I would not advise this route for the service brakes, but for the parking brake it may be good enough.
