I know that you stated that you already sprayed carb cleaner around to check for a vacuum leak but if you suspect that it may be the bushings why not try doing it again although this time concentrating the spray only on the bushing area , seems like if they are that badly worn you would notice some differance in R.P.M's when testing again. For whats its worth, maybe pull a spark plug to have a look at it to give you an idea as to what the conditions are like in the combustion chambers/cylinders. Sooted plug ?

Just an update. I re rebuilt the carb and it is running much better. I can now idle smoothly with the mixture screws out between 1.5 and two turns. Much better than the 3 to 4 turns before.

the problem now is on accelerations. It feels like it misses, has a rythmic pop in the exhaust but seems to run fine when at speed.

    I have done the following:
    Timing 5 degrees btdc
    rebuilt carb
    changed manifold gaskets
    17 inches of manifold vacuum
    new plug wires

    Any thoughts?

30 degrees. I also have a new condenser. I changed the points a couple of months ago and they looked ok. cap, rotor and plugs look good.

    Here's a suggestion:

    Go to this site
    http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_new/misc/tech_center/install/1000.shtml

Pick any carburetor & download the owners manual (free pdf file). They have a terrific section in the front on the theory of how a carb works. They break it down to the various fuel circuits and tell you what they do. They may have a troubleshooting section. I don't remember. It's been too long since I went through the whole manual. Hope this helps.

I changed the plugs and rechecked timing over the weekend. The jeep now idles great and excellerates smoothly, seams to have good power. The only thing i'm noticing now is a put, put, put in the exhaust as I accelerate. I don't remember it being there before. Is this normal? Any recomendations on what to try next? The only thing I havent changed is cap, rotor and points. (all were done recently however).

Could be you are just overly sensitive now. You know, Twitch at every little noise and going "What was that? Was that there before?"

Should be all right. Idle is smooth, acceleration is smooth, running down the hiway is smooth. Every thing sounds right. Should be good to go. :)

(R)how ever, if it really bugs you too much, I got a hundred bucks in my pocket I'm not doing any thing with at the moment.R))

Thanks for the advices. I think you're correct, its been so long since it ran this good, I'm noticing every little sound. It moves forward so I'm just going to enjoy it until the next issue surfaces.

I solved the problem this weekend. The voltage at the coil was only 3 volts so I changed the ballast resitor and every thing works perfectly. Thanks to everyone for all the advice.
