ok went back to shop and used a wire brush on the top off the piston that I had taken out earlier and this is what I found (1317P 020)

Yes theirs a little of play but not much in the rest of the cylinders?

sounds like .020 over size kind of a odd overbore but have seen it before

It sounds like someone did a re-ring job on a worn engine, which didn't help anything. I'd say the cylinders need to be measured at this point to determine what you have. Do you have any mics to measure the bore? Or can you take it to a machine shop to have it at least checked?

I've used .005" per inch of bore as an acceptable measurement, but I'm not sure if this will pertain to these motors or not.

The usual suspects, Walcks, Krage, Turner, etc. Maybe even your FLAPS!

I gotta ask... before you tore it down you said you had it ran to a boat tank, it ran good for 30 secs then would start to die...

Did you have the boat tank vented???? IE Vapor locking?

my guess if the rings are standard you were getting enough oil to foul the plugs, napa said he could get the parts for my f head, might wanna give em a shout:beer:

just for conversational purposes install one of the compression rings in the cylinder and push it about 2 inches down from the top of the block with the piston turned upside down and see what kind of ring gap you got

well been re-ringing the little f-head and got it all back together and started it up for the first time tonight had 40psi oil pressure and ran pretty good but after it ran for a minute or so it started to do the same thing the sound from the carb was like it was spraying air.

No smoke but the exhaust smelled like it was flooding out . When I bought the solex I did no adjustments on it , just bolted it on , now my question is how do I adjust it.

very happy that it started up as good as it did but don't understand why it sounds like its sucking air and smell like its flooding so bad this is the same problem I was having before I put the rings in only with out the smoke?

A 1-barrel carb is going to sound like it is sucking air (it is!) at idle, especially with the choke on. Is the idle smooth when it starts, or is it rumpty-rumpy? I have a Solex on my L-head, and I have to push the choke half-way in once it fires to keep it idling without fouling the plugs. FWIW, buy a set or two of extra plugs and try a new set. Even plugs that look fine can fail to fire evenly or at all after the carb has flooded a time or two. ;)

thank you SIDSCJ, for the link I will check it out.

Yes, W3SRL, It does run great at first idle but with the choke off (all the way forward don't have a choke cable yet) I don't hear the air sound at first and then as it runs 30 to 45 sec the air sound begins and the idle gets rough.
