    So I'm rebuilding my 79 CJ-5, and over the last 28 years, the dash-mounted vin sticker has chipped and all but washed away. There was part of it left, and from taking pictures of that and also searching for pictures of late 70's Jeep vin stickers on the internet, I decided to create a new one. I made it in Adobe Illustrator on my Mac and when I print it out on glossy paper, it looks almost identical to my old original one. The only change I made was keeping the AMC logo color instead of grey/white like my original. Anyway, I'll attach a picture. Let me know what you think or if I'm missing something that should be on a Canadian-made 1979 Jeep CJ-5 vin sticker.:beer:

    Looks good. It being a Canadian JEEP would the MAX speed be in KM's or was the JEEP built in Canada for the US?

    Yes, the Jeeps made in the Brampton plant were still good old American Motors Jeeps, they were just assembled in Canada. But everything is identical to a Jeep assembled in Toledo, except the vin sticker says "American Motors (Canada)". That's the only difference. I'm not sure if Jeeps destined for Canada had km/h speedos but mine is in mph.

    do you mind some of us using the image and replacing the VIN/other info as needed ourselves to help replace ours that are barely readable as well? That looks amazing!

    Thanks everyone. Feel free to use it as a guide for making your own reproduction. I made mine to look identical to my 79 sticker, but I've seen a 78 dash sticker that looked a little different, so I can't guarantee all late 70's-early 80's CJs look like this one. I got frustrated because I couldn't find reproduction vin stickers for AMC Jeeps anywhere, so I made my own. But I'm happy to share with other fellow Jeepers!:beer:

    SWEET! I just painted my 79 CJ-5 with an intact vin sticker. I Pulled the painter's tape off the vin, and Voila! - Vin sticker came off with the tape. wot a disappointment. Do you mind if I use? How can I change numbers if I do?

    Here's what happened to mine yesterday when I took the tape off.

    3-M tape also! It's not like I used the cheap stuff.

    mgtmel ,that looks great.You mentioned that it was printed on glossy paper. How are you going to adhere it to the metal and is the paper waterproof ?

    What I did was print it on high quality sticker paper that you can buy at Office Depot or Staples. I have a laminating machine, so I printed the vin tag on sticker paper and left the backing on, laminated it, cut around the very edge of the vin, peeled the laminate off the back including the sticker backing, and stuck it on my dash. It looks perfect, and it's waterproof.

    Now that I see the pictures of what happened to grouperboy's vin when he put tape over it and painted, I realize that must be what the PO did with my Jeep. It looked just like that, with only the vin# still showing. :mad: But now mine looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor!:)

    Oh yeah, and it still smarts. What other info did you need from me? Did you get my vin?
    It's J9F83AC820611 -Also Built in Canada

    I don't know build date. I'm guessing that there is a thread related to that somewhere on here. Will check to see. Anyone? Bueller?

    My buddy that helped me paint this past weekend thinks the build date was july. I saved the vin tag on the tape, but didn't THINK to save the tape that pulled off the build date (d'oh!). Thinking seriously about going through the two bags of trash that we generated with tape and masking paper.

    From going through all the vin (49 pages on one thread sticky!) info, all I know at this point is:

    83= CJ-5
    A= 6 cyclinder
    C= Canadian

    Still searching.

    Ok, I was totally wrong. Here's what I found:

    J= Jeep (duh.)
    9= 1979
    F= 3 speed left hand drive
    83= CJ-5 84" wheelbase
    A= 3750 Lbs.
    C= 6 Cyl 258 2 barrel Carb

    The rest is the serial number. If yours is 837983, then it (your jeep) must be newer than my 820611 ??

    Went through the trash, found it! But can't read the vin tag info.:cry: Anyone know where/which thread covers serial numbers from 75-86? I have searched and searched the forum, hit a few dead ends as the links won't connect...

    Pretty sure the VIN thread at the top of the Early forum covers it. The serial number isn't informative though - just a sequential number.

    Your engine will have a date code - that will be real close to the build date of the Jeep.

    I looked at the document - only goes through 1972.

    There are a couple of places online that decode the '75-79 VINs. The VIN and the engine date code will be the same syntax/format as in '77, and I can look at my FSM when I get home if you haven't sorted it out by then.
