I'm new to the Jeep world and need some help. Just bought a 61 Willy CJ5. After doing some serial number checks it seems to have a 198ci V6 and a 4 speed Muncie. Had it on the freeway at 50-60mph and it ran hot: gauge said between 220-240 degrees. Oil gauge not showing much pressure. Bad oil pump? Plus a stuck thermostat? Water pump looks pretty new. Gas pedal has a "sweet spot"...too much and it bogs, too little and similar result. Timing off? I pulled the valve covers and doesn't look like much oil flow, though I don't know how much I should see. Thanks for all the help. You'll be seeing me around... :) Jason74

Oil pumps tend to wear out on these and need rebuilt.

The article in the tech section for a 225 will cover your 198 as well.

Might check timing and readjust the carburetor for your bogging.

Oil should come up through the rocker arm shaft platforms and run along the shaft and down the rockers. This is no small block Chevy that throws oil everywhere when you take the valve cover off. ;)

After you settle that check your temp, if you have another gage to rule out the gage that might be good. Another thing to check is putting the t-stat in water with a thermometer and watching to see when it opens up. Also make sure the system has good clean coolant in it, radiator isn't clogged inside or covered on the outside preventing air flow.

I've been doing a little research and I'm finding that it is somewhat difficult to find parts for the 198ci V6. Would it be a good idea to swap it out for a 225 or 231? I ordered the rebuild kit for the oil pump so I'll let you know how that goes. Thanks for all the info. Jason
