$ sink gets a much deserved makeover. tub off, rust hunting:twisted:

just finishing up a 2 week vacation from work. plans fell through and unforseen circumstances meant we wound up at the homestead for most of it.

2 weeks ago today I took it out for one last roll around the neighborhood. hoping it will not be the last.

long story short: 5 days @ 1.5 hours a day, only hand tools and an angle grinder, the sink went from a drivable Jeep complete with top to a large heap of parts.

these pics were taken last friday, since then almost all of the undercoating has been removed and just tonight the hat channels were removed as well. surprising how much good metal is there, also surprising is how much of the rust is due to not washing the Tn clay out of the crevaces over it's lifetime. I removed the tool box prior to lifting the tub.

without a garage to work in, the tub is covered with a tarp behind my shop. we'll see how long it takes before a more permanent shelter is built.

wish me luck, I'm gonna need itR)

I don't think the weather did nearly as much damage as the POs. there are holes cut and drilled all over this thing.

Interesting note: the tub has the original paint code tab on the firewall, and the rear light panels look to be original, coated with the original paint and under coat. when I removed the taillight housings, it looks like someone cut the holes with a sawsall. I would have figured from the factory they would have had nice round punchouts for the lights.

removed the floor panel under the gas tank last night, PO tore a hole in it big enough to stick my leg through... must have been flintstoneR)

No pics but steady progress is being made. I reinstalled the floor riser this evening, complete with about 14 square inches of new metal in it. the front floors are almost ready to reinstall. planned to get them back in this weekend but you know how plans go.

well.... due to a slight problem with the camera, all of the pics with the floor out are now just memories.

about a month ago I gave up on saving the original floors. first off I took the whole front floor with firewall out as one piece. this makes for one seriously unmanageable piece of metal to work on. holes torn by PO attempts at customization, rust outs along the edges and where the hat chanels were attached were giving me a fight. what finally did them in though was the stretch that was inflicted on them from hauling a Kelley full hard top for 30+ years. as soon as I started welding on them, they curled like potato chips. long story short... 3 weeks of trying to patch them and I gave in and called Classic enterprises for new floor pans.

I chopped the floorpans off of the firewall and reinstalled it.

the pans came close to fitting right out of the box, but there were some problems. the mounting pads at the rear of the floor were flat instead of angled like the originals, the holes through those mounts did not line up at all and I had to fill them. the bend at the front of the passenger side was about 2 degrees off of 90 and had to be rebent. they had a generous amount of extra metal around the sides to make it easy to adjust them to your needs... all in all, you can't beat them for the price.

I bought a Harbor freight combo flanger/hole punch to flange the panels and create holes for the plug welds. this has to be one of the best tools I have bought in a long time. I can punch about 50 holes with it in the time it would take to drill one. the flanger is a little on the short side giving only 1/2 inch of overlap, but it does a nice job.

today I reinstalled the front floor braces and tub side braces. they were butchered by the PO in an exuberant attempt at creating header clearance. it took a bit of creativity, but now they look like they were meant to be that way.

the weather has started to change and I am reaching the point where I will have to cover the tub and move on to other hobbies for winter.

Looking like good progress! Were the prices fair for the panels?

Yes, I would have rather kept the original steel, but they were too far gone and I would have wound up replacing most of them anyway. now I have flat floors with no rust. I am not after a show restoration, I want a tub with no rust and as much of the original steel as possible.
