My wifes father just passed away and left us his 76 cj5. he was the original owner and garage kept it for 31 years so it is in great shape. We want to kept it mostly original but I am putting power steeing and a brake booste on to make it easier for my wife to drive. I bought the steering conversion off of an 82 cj5 and installed it today but the double grooved water pump pulley I got did not line up with any of the others. It was about 1/2 inch off. Does anyone know if there are more than one kind of double grooved pulleys for the 258? Next is the power brake booster. Does anyone know if I should use the original master cylinder or the one for the 82? The jeep will still have all drum brakes. The master cylinder for the 82 is larger and that jeep probably had front discs. Should I get a proportioning valve? Do I need some kind of check valve to compensate for the return springs on the drum brakes? I want to make sure I set it up right so it is safe because my wife and four year old will be in it.
    Thanks for any advice, chris
PS- Im new to jeeps but in just two weeks of toolin around in the 76- I love it!

Yes there were a number of different dual pulleys for the 258 and I had the same problem on my 76.

Even the stock 1 groove pulley was different height.

Unfortunatly I had my selection of pulleys laying in a bucket so I'm not sure which one was which but I took the longest one 9look at the length of the nose on the pulley) and shimmed it out with a shim I cut out and mounted it between the pulley and the mount on the water pump.

Just to be clear there were 3 different waterpumps used on CJ between 76 and 86. The difference being mainly in the height of the fan mounting flange on the water pump.

When I did my power brake conversion I was planning on using the original MC and combination valve. Never having done it however I cannot tell you how the push rod will fit on the booster. I did deside to convert to disk brakes anyway and ended up with an 84 MC, combination valve and booster with a set of 79 disk brakes. Knowing that you need a check valve in the disk MC make me think you know what your doing.

Thanks for the info john. My pulley was exactly like the one in your picture.
The guy I bought the power steering conversion from is sending me another pully so I should be in good shape.

If you still have the chance to get all the pulleys and brackets off the donor engine, that's what I'd suggest you do. Then use a water pump that's correct for the donor engine.

    Welcome from Boston!

Both style brakes use a residual valve. One uses a 2lb residual, the other a 10 lb residual.

 I forget which gets which

Maybe someone here with a better memory can tell you

Appreciate the info. Ill check out my profile page tonight when I have some free time- I am getting ready to replace the dist cap and points as well as the non working vacuum advance and then retime the engine. I dont know why it does not have electronic ignition because the chilton manual said every jeep 1975 and newer had it instead of points. But I finally got the right cap. Anyone know where I can get a set of castor shims for this jeep, the steering does not return to straight ahead after turning very well and I think that maybe a few mor degrees of castor might help. The local napa came up blank.
My goal is to replace anything that is wearable or shoes any sign of damage now so that I know what I am dealing with as far as maintenance. Does anyone have any suggestions as to touble spots on a 76 cj5 that I should address.
    Thanks, chris
